#WriteRoundOz w/ Sandi Wallace – WIN!

Tell Me Why Sandi Wallace#Write Round Oz is dropping into Sandi Wallace in the enchanting Dandenong Ranges in Victoria.

Sandi, thank you for letting me park my rig on your …

… drive? Hmm, it’s a bit tight. Am I going to knock over a rhododendron or two on my way out?

Oh, I hope not, Jenn! I’m rather attached to my rhododendrons.

Oh! Oops about the rhododendrons but what’s that I see written on your ‘welcome mat’, Sandi?

Enter at own risk. Crazy writer lives here.

I miss my HUGE refrigerator. If I looked in your refrigerator right now, what would I find?

I’ll go check… Phew, lots of healthy stuff (I’m a personal trainer in my ‘other’ life) and uh-oh, a couple of things well past their use-by.

Downsizing my life into a 24 ft caravan meant leaving lots of things behind in boxes. What (or who!!) would you have trouble leaving behind if you took off in a caravan?

It might be cosy with my hubby, dog, two cats, and me, but I couldn’t leave any of my family behind. Out of the household items, I’d probably miss my lovely big bookcases the most.

Do you REALLY have room at your house to park a fifth wheeler caravan and do you mind visitors? Oh, sorry, you don’t have to answer that one!! 🙂

If you can’t get the van up our curving drive, you can park on the verge out front and you’re very welcome, just let me know in advance. 😉

Country curiosities…

My latest novel, Season of Shadow and Light, has a strong horse theme. (I love what horses can teach us). If you were an animal what would you be?

I love horses too, although I haven’t been riding in a long time. I’d be a horse or a cat. I’d choose horse on one of my energetic, ‘I want to be outside and free days’, cat when I’m feeling lazy, ready for a snooze in a sunny nook of the house. That pretty much sums up my active and sedentary/personal trainer and author personality split!

You’re cooking and your food is going up against the best cooks from the CWA (Country Women’s Association). What would be your winning dish?

I do a mean spaghetti! Look out lovely ladies at the CWA.

(Ooooooh! CWA ladies everywhere are quivering in fear!!!!!)

About you…

What is the hardest part of writing for you?

I can fall into the trap of thinking too far ahead and need to work on focusing on the ‘right now’.

If someone was to write your biography, what do you think the title should be?

The Armchair Detective

Favourite four…

Favourite four characters in my book Tell Me Why: John Franklin (he’s a maverick cop, so just flawed enough, and looks lovely in and out of his blue uniform), Georgie Harvey (far from perfect and never boring, I love this gutsy woman), Pam Stewart (she’s a bit naughty and would make a brilliant grandmother) and Franklin’s daughter, Kat (a chocolate box without descriptions, she brings back good and bad memories – sorry, Mum! – of being fifteen-going-on-twenty-five).

Favourite place in Australia: Home (in the Dandenong Ranges), Daylesford, Harrietville and other country towns – we tend to swap one hill (home) for another on our holidays.

Favourite holiday destination: Country Victoria but I’d like to do a little overseas travelling with my hubby one day.

Favourite movie: I’m hooked on crime movies but can’t re-watch them too often because the plot stays too fresh in my mind. The movies I tend to see repeatedly are rom-coms like The Holiday and Love Actually. Who doesn’t love a bit of romance?

(*snap* my fave movies too – along with Dirty Dancing, of course!)

Favourite quote: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

If I said to you, “Just entertain me for five minutes, I’m not going to talk,” what would you do?

I’d ask, ‘Tell me why?’ We’d chuckle. I’d wink, then talk about my book Tell Me Why and how it came to be published.

And I’d say… Tell Me More, Sandi Wallace!

Tell Me Why is book one in my Rural Crime Files series and my debut novel. I’m pretty stoked to have achieved step one in a lifelong dream to be the writer of a crime series and standalone books. It is an authentic, gritty, rural crime story with a touch of romance and stars Franklin and Harvey. They will return in book two, Black Saturday, which will be released later this year.

Give us the blurb.

Picturesque Daylesford has a darker side.

Melbourne writer Georgie Harvey heads to the mineral springs region of central Victoria to look for a missing farmer. There she uncovers links between the woman’s disappearance and her dangerous preoccupation with the unsolved mystery surrounding her husband.

Maverick cop and solo dad John Franklin is working a case that’s a step up from Daylesford’s usual soft crime; a poison-pen writer whose targets are single mothers.

Georgie’s investigation stirs up long buried secrets and she attracts enemies. When she reports the missing person to the local cops, sparks fly between her and Franklin. Does he dismiss the writer too quickly?

A country cop, city writer, retired farmer and poison-pen stalker all want answers.

What will they risk to get them?

What will be the ultimate cost?

___________________________________________________________

WIN a print (signed) copy of Tell Me Why.

We are looking for the funniest or best response to: ‘Senior Constable John Franklin has just flashed the strobes and whooped the siren on the marked four-wheel drive. He is waving you over to the verge. What have you done?’

Winner announced here, on the blog in two weeks. Australian postal addresses only.

#WriteRoundOz – Helene Young’s Northern Heat Blog Tour (WIN)

Flat Cover Northern Heat Med ResHelene Young Northern Heat At home with Helene Young … somewhere in the Coral Sea

Helene! Thank you for letting me park my rig on your… ahhh…new floating pontoon!

What a fabulous idea, Jenn. It will either sink or swim. *groan*

(Sink or swim was my Mum’s favourite saying, and what I tell myself when subbing a new manuscript. And, so far, so good!)

It’s great to be part of your blog tour, Helene. I’m mid tour myself and giving away my 3 x books to a lucky reader. You have a giveaway attached to your tour, too. Details are at the bottom of this post. (Enter my 3 x book giveaway here.)

Helen, I just realised how silly my regular Q&A is, given you live on a boat, but here goes…

What’s that I see written on your ‘welcome mat’?

‘Ahoy!’ (We like to keep it nautical.)

If I looked in your refrigerator right now, what would I find?

Avocadoes! Manna from heaven and perfect at this time of year

Downsizing my life into a 24 ft caravan meant leaving lots of things behind in boxes. I imagine when you did the same to Roobi you had trouble leaving certain things behind.

Since Roobinesque is quite similar in size I’ve already made this decision and undoubtedly leaving my books behind led to tears… That and my beautiful outdoor setting which had seen many an entertaining dinner party…

(Folks, I swear I saw that outdoor setting of Helene’s in the ahem…”storage hull”.  I’m thinking Helene ‘schnuck’ it on board. Does the captain know? I wonder!!!!

So, whose home would you like to visit in your van and why?

There’s this tiny island off the end of the runway at Hamilton Island. Every time I flew in there with work I wondered about it. It can only be accessed by boat so I plan on doing that soon!

I usually ask my guest authors if they have room at their house to park a fifth wheeler caravan and do they mind visitors.

Happy to have you tagging along on the pontoon beside the dinghy!

Country curiosities…

My latest novel, Season of Shadow and Light, has a strong horse theme. (I love what horses can teach us). If you were an animal what would you be?

A staffy – loyal, happy and a little on the stocky side 🙂

You’re cooking and your food going up against the best cooks from the CWA (Country Women’s Association). What would be your winning dish?

My pavlova – crusty on the outside, melt in the mouth soft on the insides and smothered with cream and passionfruit.

About you…

What is the hardest part of writing for you?

Finding the time…

If someone were to write your biography, what do you think the title should be?

Dare To Dream.

Favourite four…

Favourite place in Australia: Tough call. I love Uluru and Birdsville, but then there’s Horn Island and Cooktown. And South Strabroke Island’s special. And Albany. And… Can I just go with Australia’s my favourite place?

Favourite holiday destination: Antarctica – the most amazing trip I’ve ever had! Who knew white came in so many shades. And then there were the penguins, historic huts, icebergs, The Dry Valleys, seals, whales, dolphins, and great company on the ship.

Favourite movie: Love Actually – so many intertwined threads.

Favourite quote: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

(Ahh, Mark Twain! Also a favourite of mine.)

If I said to you, “Just entertain me for five minutes, I’m not going to talk,” what would you do?

I’d read you the opening chapters of Northern Heat – nothing like a bit of shameless self-promotion!

(Ahhh! Read. Loved. Informed! (We’ll be touring Queensland as of next month so extreme weather survival tips welcome.)

 HELENE’s GIVEAWAY…

To celebrate the release of my sixth book I have six prize packs to give away. Four of them are duos of SAFE HARBOUR and NORTHERN HEAT and one major prize is a complete set of my six books. For international readers there is a duo of e-books to be won.

To enter leave a comment here or share the post and/or the trailer on social media site and I’ll double your chances!

Working at Cooktown’s youth centre has given him the chance to make a difference again, and the opportunity to flirt with Dr Kristy Dark. The local GP is hiding her own secrets and struggling to raise her feisty teenage daughter alone.

When a severe cyclone menaces the coast, threatening to destroy everything in its path, tensions come to a head – and the weather is not the only danger. Cut off from the world and with her life on the line, Kristy will have to summon her courage and place her trust in Conor, or they’ll both lose someone they love.

#WriteRoundOz w/ Rachel Amphlett & Mistake Creek

Rachel AmphlettMistake Creek Rachel AmphlettYou know how much I love a storm–right?

In Rachel Amphlett’s latest, Mistake Creek, there’s a storm coming…

When Nina O’Brien returns to the small town of Mistake Creek after ten years, she’s in a race against time to protect her father’s business from an incoming storm so it can be sold to pay for his urgent medical treatment.

As flood warnings echo over the radio and the storm breaks with enormous force across the tiny Californian community, Nina is joined by others seeking shelter from the onslaught.

Her life is changed forever when a stranger appears at her door, bloodied and incoherent.

With a ruthless killer exposed among the small group, Nina is thrust into a deadly conspiracy involving a military veteran seeking revenge and an FBI agent desperate to prevent a catastrophic terrorism threat.

Alone, with no means to raise the alarm, Nina realises that to save one man, she must learn to trust another.

Mistake Creek sounds fabulous, so here I am rocking up in my rig to Rachel Amphlett’s North Brissy abode (which I hear has a very comfy sofa bed. Mentioning that may have been a mistake, Rachel).

What’s that I see written on your ‘welcome mat’?

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see the writing – it’s covered in paint flakes and plaster dust while we’re finishing renovations!

(I’m pretty sure it says, when you are up this way the sofa bed is yours!)

If I looked in your refrigerator right now, what would I find?

Lots of fresh veggies, olives, pasta, cheese, a half-full bottle of Verdelho (hey, I’m an optimist!), soft drinks, sparkling water, and a veggie bolognese I made last night.

Downsizing my life into a 24 ft caravan meant leaving lots of things behind in boxes. What (or who!!) would you have trouble leaving behind if you took off in a caravan?

Books! I know I can use my Kindle, but I’ve still got paperbacks of all my favourite books. We’ve only just unpacked them after they’d been in boxes for ten years after emigrating here, so it would be hard boxing them up again so soon.

Do you REALLY have room at your house to park a fifth wheeler caravan and do you mind visitors? Oh, sorry, you don’t have to answer that one!! 🙂

Yes, and not at all. We have dog treats for the fluffy kid, too.

Country curiosities…

My latest novel, Season of Shadow and Light, has a strong horse theme. (I love what horses can teach us). If you were an animal what would you be?

A rat. People think of them as pests when they turn up in the wrong places, but they’re incredibly resourceful. I’d like to think I’m like that – able to adapt to whatever life throws at me.

You’re cooking and your food going up against the best cooks from the CWA (Country Women’s Association). What would be your winning dish?

Crumbs, they’d kick my arse for sure. I make a great Sunday brunch with asparagus, haloumi, baked beans, smoked trout, baked tomatoes and a mixture of mushrooms with fresh spinach and garlic.

I’m usually relegated to the starters and washing up whenever we have a dinner party though as my other half is such a great chef. He’s usually the one that makes sure I eat at all – I’ve been known to go for a day or two without eating a proper meal. I simply get caught up in what I’m doing and only come up for air when my stomach rumbles so loudly that I can’t concentrate!

About you…

What is the hardest part of writing for you?

The frustration in not having more time to do it – I’m sure I’m not alone in that regard!

What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview? How would you answer that question?

Who would you like to co-write a thriller with?

And I’d answer Ken Follett or Robert Harris. (I would have said Robert Ludlum too, but sadly I missed my chance!)

Favourite four…
Look Closer by Rachel Amphlett

Favourite place in Australia: Port Douglas, Qld (so far – there’s a lot of Australia I haven’t had a chance to explore yet!)

Favourite holiday destination (anywhere): Cuba was great, but I’m sure I’ll discover more!

Favourite movie: Raiders of the Lost Ark

Favourite quote: Next time your life flashes before your eyes, make sure you’ve got something to watch [this was from a UK Virgin Airlines TV ad in the 1990s – it’s on YouTube!]

If I said to you, “Just entertain me for five minutes, I’m not going to talk,” what would you do?

Tell you what we used to get up to when we had a lock-in at our pub. You might need more than five minutes though. 🙂

 About Rachel…

Before emigrating to Australia in 2005, Rachel Amphlett helped run a pub, played lead guitar in bands, worked as a TV and film extra, dabbled in radio as a presenter and freelance producer for the BBC, and worked in publishing as a sub-editor and editorial assistant.

After returning to writing, Rachel enjoyed publication success both in Australia and the United Kingdom with her short stories. Her first thriller White Gold was released in 2011, with the Italian foreign rights for the novel being sold to Fanucci Editore’s TIMECrime imprint in 2014.

She is currently working on the third in her Dan Taylor military thriller series, due for publication later this year, and plotting the next two books in that series.

In her spare time, she enjoys skiing, horse-riding, playing guitar, reading (of course), and writing (another no-brainer). She also has a great love of films, especially thrillers, rom-com, sci-fi and biopics. She doesn’t mind admitting she’s scared of horror films.

You can keep in touch with Rachel via her mailing list: http://www.rachelamphlett.com/mailing-list.html or via Facebook  and Twitter: @RachelAmphlett
